This Reading Mama's Suggestions: Stage 4 & 5

I’ll be honest, this is not an area in which I’m too familiar, as most of the kids I taught in school and tutored were from the lower stages.  But I have a few suggestions.

  • Continue reading to your child.  Yes, it’s still okay, especially if they still “let” you! 🙂
  • Non-fiction really tends to pick up in these older ages.  Study nonfiction text structures (see Non-fiction under Comprehension).  Understanding the text structure will really help them organize the important information from a text.

Word Study:

These two supplement books are GREAT resources for working with spellers in this stage.  They do still have a lot to learn about how words work:

Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers

Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Derivational Relations Spellers
