Why this blog?

Teaching, especially the teaching of reading, is such a passion of mine.  Entering the homeschool world, I realized that I still needed to share my ideas and hear ideas from others.  As I began sharing my ideas for reading with other mamas who were considering homeschooling, some of them said that they didn’t think they could teach their child to read…that they didn’t even know where to begin.  Some who were already homeschooling shared their frustrations with teaching reading.

Curious to see what the homeschool world had to offer these mamas, I perused through a few popular books used to teach phonics/reading and honestly, I wasn’t too impressed.  Yes, your child can learn to read that way.  And I’ll even admit that there may be some kids who like to learn that way.  But as I flipped through the books, the lessons seemed more on the monotonous and “cookie cutter” side.  My desire is to empower and equip all mamas (even if your child is in public school): YOU CAN TEACH YOUR CHILD TO READ!  And…it can be fun!  My prayer is that this blog will be a blessing by demonstrating some tools and strategies for teaching reading in a fun and developmentally appropriate way.

I hope you enjoy,
